Tanya Urschel, Nonprofit Engagement Manager, PayPal
The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation donates musical instruments to under-funded music programs, empowering youngsters to be better students and inspiring creativity and expression through playing music. Felice, the foundation's President and CEO, recently sat down with me to discussed their mission and the ways in which PayPal helps along the way.
Can you share any background and/or fun facts about the organization?
The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation was inspired by the acclaimed motion picture Mr. Holland’s Opus, the story of the profound effect a dedicated music teacher had on generations of students. The film's composer, Michael Kamen created the foundation in 1996 as his commitment to the future of music education. He wanted to give back something that was freely given to him in the New York public school system. We have helped over 1,300 under-funded school music programs across the country, giving them instruments they could never afford otherwise.
What makes the organization unique? Why would someone support you?
Most people understand the value of playing music in school and our donors want to give that opportunity to kids who can’t afford to rent or buy an instrument. They have great memories and experiences of being in the band in school, or now have kids in band and see how it benefits them. We focus on one simple thing that can make an immediate and tangible difference for students and schools.
What are some of your biggest challenges in getting support?
Our biggest challenges are letting people who care about music know we exist and conveying how important the arts are in education. It inspires creativity and helps kids in reading and math – helps them socialize and become more confident. The message is so important and it’s challenging getting through the noise and getting noticed in a big way. StubHub, which, like PayPal, is a part of the eBay Inc. family, has helped so much. They have the platform to really effect social change through their messaging and range of options for their fans and customers. As one of StubHub’s Rising Stars, we have an advantage in reaching and educating more people about the impact of music education and how it can launch kids in school into successful careers and happier lives. StubHub is helping us get instruments into 20 more school this year through their support.
Patrons can donate through PayPal on our website and our eBay auction page.
Why do you like using PayPal to collect donations? Do you use it for anything else? Do your customers like using PayPal?
Giving people trusted, simple online payment options is crucial for any non-profit.
How can others get involved in your organization’s cause?
By donating a gently used instrument, making a cash contribution, following us on social media and spreading the word about us, sharing their stories about their own experiences in school band and orchestra, what it meant in their lives.
Would you recommend PayPal to another nonprofit? Why?
Yes, it’s important to give people options and make them happy to donate. PayPal is quick and easy and very familiar to most people. It ensures privacy and an easy transaction.
