BlackBerry Cylance Unveils Behavioral Analytics Solution

BlackBerry Cylance, the company that resulted from BlackBerry’s acquisition of Cylance, on Tuesday introduced CylancePERSONA, a proactive endpoint behavioral analytics solution.

The new solution, which expands the capabilities of the Cylance native AI platform, is designed to protect organizations against attacks involving stolen credentials and user impersonation by combining continuous biometric behavior and user conduct monitoring.

CylancePERSONA continuously looks for suspicious keyboard and mouse actions and other user activity that could suggest an account takeover. The solution also compares current activity to previously monitored login activity, including location and time, to ensure that a system is accessed by a legitimate user.

The collected data is used to calculate a Cylance Trust Score. If this score drops below a specified threshold, various types of actions can be automatically initiated.

CylancePERSONA can automatically interrupt user activity, including by suspending processes, logging off the user, or by challenging the user to produce additional forms of authentication (step-up authentication).

BlackBerry Cylance claims the solution should reduce false positives by leveraging baseline user behavior.

“Every day, rogue insiders and external threat actors exploit valid user credentials to launch cyber attacks, so there is a clear need for organizations to ensure every user logged into their network can be trusted anytime and at all times,” said Eric Cornelius, chief product officer at BlackBerry Cylance. “CylancePERSONA addresses this challenge. With a combination of flexible initial authentication, user-centric biometrics, AI behavioral monitoring, and automated active responses, CylancePERSONA delivers a scalable, efficient, effective solution that can ensure trust of the user is continuous.”

BlackBerry Cylance told SecurityWeek that the new solution is expected to become available in May.

BlackBerry recently acquired Cylance for $1.4 billion in cash. Prior to the acquisition, Cylance had raised nearly $300 million in funding and had over 4,000 customers.

BlackBerry Cylance also announced on Tuesday that Verizon is adding its antivirus solutions to its managed security services (MSS) portfolio, and that it has teamed up with AttackIQ to help organizations ensure that their endpoint security solutions are installed and configured correctly.
