Amazon Smartphone to Support NFC, but No Mention of NFC Applications

Amazon unveiled its first smartphone, the Fire, Wednesday and confirmed that the device will support NFC, but it mentioned no uses for the technology.

CEO Jeff Bezos did not mention mobile payments or other potential applications for NFC during a launch event in Seattle, or in the company’s press release touting features of the new smartphone.

The device includes a program called Firefly, which recognizes media such as movies, television programs, and songs, as well as physical products, such as books, DVDs, and consumer goods. When a Fire user presses a button on the smartphone, Firefly displays product information and links to purchase the item on Amazon or add it to a wish list.
