The Amazon Go cashierless store concept may be moving into airports as the powerhouse omnichannel retailer is reportedly evaluating airport location options.
The news, according to a New York Post/Reuters report, is the latest expansion of the concept which began with one Amazon Go store in Seattle. This year Amazon opened seven of the stores across Seattle, San Francisco and Chicago.
Amazon Go offers Amazon Prime members a cashierless shopping experience via computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning technologies. Products are detected and placed in a virtual cart as shoppers move them into their baskets. Once done shopping consumers can just walk out of the store as Amazon then charges their Amazon account and emails a receipt.
Reuters, citing public records and people familiar with Amazon’s strategy, reported Amazon is assessing "top" U.S. airports, including Los Angeles International and San Jose International. Amazon declined to comment to Reuters.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Amazon is testing its automated checkout technology at larger stores in Seattle. The initial Amazon Go store in Seattle opened as a beta experience available to employees only.
