American Express has launched an online checkout service that works across desktop, mobile and native apps to let its US card members make payments with their existing American Express user ID and password, without having to create or manage a new account. The company has also teamed up with payment platform Stripe to extend the solution to all Stripe participating merchants.
“With Amex Express Checkout, card members simply use their existing americanexpress.com user ID and password and American Express auto-fills the checkout fields with their card details and relevant account information,” the company says.
“Amex Express Checkout is not a wallet and does not require a card member to create or manage a new account. A card member’s account information is transferred to the merchant through a token, allowing for safer transactions than a traditional online checkout.
“And, because American Express auto-fills account information in real time for every online transaction via Amex Express Checkout, both card members and merchants are assured the card number and billing details provided are current — eliminating the need to manually update those details as may be required with an online wallet.”
“Amex Express Checkout is available for card members to use online today at BarkBox, Burberry, Ledbury, Newegg, Sabon, Ticketmaster, Warby Parker and The Wall Street Journal,” the company adds.
“American Express and Stripe are working together to allow merchants using Stripe as a payments platform to easily enable Amex Express Checkout for their customers.
“Amex Express Checkout is expected to be available in the coming months on websites for Avis Car Rental, Banana Republic, Cole Haan, Hulu, Gap, Intermix, Old Navy, Popsugar Must Have, Rocketmiles, 1-800-Flowers.com and others. Starting today, card members will also get a one-time $10 statement credit per merchant when they use Amex Express Checkout online.”
“We know our card members and merchants want a simple, fast checkout process,” says Leslie Berland, executive vice president of digital partnerships and development at American Express.
“Amex Express Checkout leverages our unique technology to create a checkout experience that is valuable to merchants and secure for card members.”
