U.S.-based Broadcom acknowledged that it lost two major design wins for smartphones, but noted wins in wearables, and the company predicted growth over time for its NFC business.
“We lost a couple of big design wins to a competitor,” CFO Eric Brandt said during a first quarter conference call Thursday. He did not name products or manufacturers, but one of those losses is almost certainly the coveted NFC contract for Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone.
As NFC Times reported in March Netherlands-based NXP Semiconductors captured that design win with its PN547 NFC radio chip, winning back the high-profile Samsung model from Broadcom.
