Broadcom Announces NFC Chip Targeted at Automotive Market

U.S.-based chip maker Broadcom announced it is sampling a new NFC chip targeting the automotive market.

Broadcom, which came up short last year against rivals for high-profile smartphone design wins with its NFC controllers, introduced the BCM89095 NFC chip targeting car connectivity at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Monday. The chip is aimed at such automotive applications as keyless entry, reading a vehicle’s diagnostic information and Bluetooth pairing with a vehicle’s entertainment or navigation system.

For instance, drivers could tap an NFC key, smartphone, or contactless card on a tag to unlock the car, a type of authentication, which Broadcom claims could appeal to the rental car market. Users could also tap a smartphone to a vehicle’s dashboard to initiate Bluetooth pairing of the phone’s navigation or music applications with the car’s systems.
