Canadian telco joint venture EnStream has signed a new three-year deal with BlackBerry, as it expands its TSM service into provisioning secure payment applications for Canadian banks.
The deal renews and expands on a contract between BlackBerry and EnStream announced in late 2012 that has had BlackBerry hosting and managing EnStream’s secure element, or root, TSM service.
EnStream is now believed to be providing provisioning of NFC payment applications for one major Canadian bank via the new contract with BlackBerry. Others could follow.
NFC continues to hold promise in Canada, where the three major mobile operators and big five banks have launched SIM-based NFC services or plan to do so. The country is also considered a budding hotspot for future NFC launches using host-card emulation, thanks to its large base of contactless point-of-sale terminals, growing use of contactless cards by consumers and high rate of smartphones ownership.
