NFC Times Exclusive: Despite the buzz around host-card emulation, or HCE, which allows for payment and other NFC applications on contactless card terminals without the need for secure elements, expect plenty of embedded secure elements and NFC SIMs to be shipped in 2014.
With Google’s announcement of its support for host-card emulation in its latest Android operating system, some observers were predicting a not-so-protracted demise for the TSM and secure element business units of major NFC vendors.
While a promising technology, HCE has some maturing to do, as NFC Times reports in the second part of its special report on host-card emulation.
Meanwhile, even with discouraging early returns for consumer take-up of NFC services, momentum continues for rollouts using both NFC SIMs and, more recently, embedded secure elements. And with secure elements comes the need for TSMs.
