Germany’s third largest mobile operator, E-Plus, has launched NFC payments with a prepaid wallet card, joining other German telcos, which have also launched prepaid payments applications on their SIM cards.
The telco, known as Base in Germany, launched an Android-based mobile wallet app with the prepaid-payment service, which will support MasterCard PayPass.
There will also be available a companion plastic wallet card that can be used at the many point-of-sale terminals in Germany not supporting contactless payment. At the limited number of contactless POS terminals deployed so far, users can tap to pay without entering a PIN for transactions of €25 (US$33.81) or less. For amounts above that, users enter their PIN codes in the point-of-sale terminal. They can reload the card via their bank accounts, including automatic recharging.
