The NFC Forum has added the final major component to its device certification with the addition of analog testing, but the impact of the development on handset makers’ willingness to submit their devices for certification remains to be seen.
Sources have said that smartphone manufacturers were waiting for the analog piece before submitting their devices for NFC Forum-approved testing and certification. While more devices makers have been submitting some of their models for certification, including Samsung Electronics for the Galaxy S4, the vast majority of devices are not yet certified by the NFC Forum, and it’s virtually certain that Apple will not submit its NFC-enabled iPhones due out today for the testing.
Among the requirements for forum device certification is support for tag reader-writer mode, which the iPhones and forthcoming NFC-enabled Apple Watch will not support, with Apple focused entirely on enabling payments in card-emulation mode with the NFC functionality in its devices, sources have told NFC Times,
