NFC Times Exclusive – The NFC Forum is working on a tag Type 5 specification based on the ISO/IEC 15693 standard, NFC Forum executive director Paula Hunter has confirmed to NFC Times. She did not release a timeframe for publishing of the new specification, however.
Type 5 tags would be configured to support NDEF messages like the four other long-standing tag types specified by the NFC Forum standards and trade association. Tags supporting ISO 15693 generally enable applications with longer read ranges.
In addition to an operational specification defining how devices would interact with the Type 5 tags, the forum is working on revisions to the NFC Forum’s existing analog, digital, protocol, activity and NCI specifications as they relate to Type 5 tags. NCI defines the interface between an NFC controller and application processor in a device.
