Japan-based video game company Nintendo will begin accepting contactless payments via its Wii U game consoles in Japan later this year, and the company will also release a new line of NFC-enabled toy figures for the console.

The video game maker would be the first to accept contactless payments, using Japan’s proprietary FeliCa technology from Sony, though the move could be a precursor to standard contactless and NFC-mobile payments. It hopes the new payments option and especially the NFC-enabled figurines helps its loss-making Wii U business.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said in a conference call Thursday that the video game maker would begin accepting contactless payments through the console to Nintendo’s online store, where players can purchase downloadable game content and other digital goods, using Suica, a contactless e-money card often used for transit fare payments in Japan.
