NXP Semiconductors said sales in its emerging ID business–mainly made up of its NFC chips–increased by 22% in the second quarter, compared with the first quarter, and CEO Richard Clemmer insisted the chip maker’s secure element business would continue to remain a strong contributor.

But Clemmer, speaking to financial analysts today, gave no hints as to whether NXP would supply NFC technology to Apple for the next iPhone, a subject of much speculation. The chip maker’s projection for its overall identification segment for the third quarter called for a healthy though not a huge growth rate for the third quarter. 

Any supply contract for NXP for the iPhone would show up in the chip maker’s third quarter sales figures. Analyst firm Morgan Stanley has predicted NXP would get an NFC supply contract from Apple, but the firm did not cite any direct information for the prediction.
