NXP Semiconductors reported a big jump in sales from its emerging ID unit in the third quarter, thanks to shipments of NFC chips and secure elements to Apple for the tech giant’s new iPhones.
The Netherlands-based chip maker reported sales in the third quarter for emerging ID more than doubled from the second quarter and increased by 160% from the same period a year ago.
NXP is shipping all the NFC chips and embedded secure elements for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and also for the forthcoming Apple Watch. The chips form the core NFC technology Apple is using for its Apple Pay mobile-payments platform, which launched in the U.S. Oct. 20. NXP is believed to be producing a customized stacked NFC controller and secure element for Apple, called the PN65V10. There is also a booster chip that lies between the NXP chip and NFC antenna, supplied by Austria-based ams AG.
