NFC Times Exclusive: Despite a slow year in NFC sales and loss of business for Samsung’s Galaxy S4 flagship, NXP Semiconductors shipped significantly more NFC controllers in 2013 than in 2012 and with its design win for the Galaxy S5 appears poised to take the lion's share of business this year.
NXP's growth in unit shipments last year (see chart below) came from business from other Samsung Galaxy smartphone models, including Galaxy Note 3 shipments in the U.S., along with most other Android device makers, such as Sony, HTC, Motorola and some LG Electronics models.
The Netherlands-based chip maker lost the NFC business for the Galaxy S4 to rival U.S.-based Broadcom, which also had some other Galaxy and LG design wins of note. As NFC Times reported earlier this month, NXP will be supplying NFC controllers to the large majority of the Galaxy S5 phones this year.
