OTI to Supply Contactless and NFC Readers for Gasoline Stations in North America

Israel-based contactless and NFC vendor On Track Innovations announced Monday it had received an order for 30,000 readers for point-of-sale terminals at retail gasoline stations in North America.

OTI noted in its announcement that the readers will not only support the contactless applications of the major payment schemes, such as Visa payWave and MasterCard PayPass, but also the Isis NFC SmartTap reader application. The vendor said it included SmartTap on the customized readers.

SmartTap is Isis’ mobile-commerce application that enables consumers to tap for payment and redeem rewards, coupons or offers in a single tap. This could mean the terminals support full NFC functionality, not just simple contactless. Isis is a joint venture of U.S. mobile operators Verizon Wireless, AT&T Mobility and T-Mobile USA.

OTI said it plans to ship all of the readers this year and “expects to receive follow-on reader orders from this customer later this year.” The customer would likely be the maker of fuel dispenser payment terminals for gasoline stations in the U.S. and likely Canada.
