NFC Times Exclusive: Samsung Electronics has split the NFC chip supply contracts for its new Galaxy Note 3, possibly the first major NFC device that has multiple chip suppliers, NFC Times has learned.
Samsung is using an NFC controller from NXP Semiconductors for shipments in the U.S. in the Note 3, a device that will support the Isis Mobile Wallet, NFC Times has learned. Meanwhile, Samsung is buying its NFC controllers from chip maker Broadcom for shipments of the device outside of the U.S. The device, the third installment in Samsung’s popular phablet series, went on sale within the last month.
Although Broadcom’s Mohamed Awad told NFC Times he believes the multiple suppliers for the Note 3 is a sign the NFC market is maturing, it appears to be a loss for Broadcom–which was believed to have been supplying chips for nearly all major NFC-enabled Galaxy devices starting this spring–most notably Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S4.
