Second Kiwi Bank Snubs SIMs for HCE with ANZ’s Planned NFC Launch; Bell ID Gets Nod as Vendor

NFC Times Exclusive Insight – Another major New Zealand bank has announced plans to launch NFC payments with host-card emulation, snubbing a joint venture set up to launch SIM-based NFC on the island nation.

ANZ announced it would add HCE-based wallet and payments to its goMoney mobile-banking app for Android phones later this year. The project uses HCE technology from Netherlands-based Bell ID, the bank confirmed.

“As an overall solution, we formed the view that having the mobile wallet within ANZ goMoney would be a better customer experience in terms of ease of set up, accessibility and security,” Liz Maguire, head of digital channels and transformation, told NFC Times through a spokesman, when asked why the bank chose HCE over SIM-based NFC. ANZ says it hasn’t ruled out also launching on SIM cards, however.
