Google’s deal with AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless to have Google Wallet pre-installed on their Android phones marks the end of the road for Softcard, the NFC payments joint venture set up as Isis by the three US carriers in 2010.
“Softcard technology and capabilities will be transitioned to Google,” the company has told NFC World. “We expect that Softcard will cease to exist as a standalone business.”
Google declined NFC World’s request for an interview to discuss the move in more detail at this time but says it will provide an update “when there is more to share”.
