Spanish bank BBVA today declared itself the first bank to commercially launch payments with host-card emulation, announcing an upgrade of its Android mobile-wallet app incorporating Visa’s HCE specifications.
BBVA said that the HCE technology in its updated wallet is now available to customers with Android NFC devices running Google’s latest operating system, Android 4.4, KitKat, enabling them to make NFC payments with Visa payWave. The bank said it would expand the service to customers in the U.S., Mexico and Chile later this year. The service is likely operating under a waiver from Visa Europe.
