Mobile operator TIM Brasil and Banco Bradesco have disclosed plans for an NFC trial that they say would enable users to pay for purchases at contactless point-of-sale terminals by tapping their Motorola or LG Electronics NFC phones, with the funds deducted from their debit accounts.
Bradesco, one of Brazil’s largest banks, said in its announcement of the trial that it expects the bank and TIM to commercially launch NFC by the end of 2013.
It’s the second trial this year for TIM Brasil, which also announced a pilot in February with the even larger Banco Itaú, using MasterCard PayPass. MasterCard told NFC Times at the time that the project was expected to lead to a rollout of mobile PayPass in Brazil.
For the new trial, Bradesco and TIM Brasil said they would enable users to pay at the physical point of sale, using a bank-issued payWave debit application on the smartphones, likely stored on SIMs issued by TIM. Cielo of Brazil is providing the point-of-sale terminals and probably the processing.
There was no figure available on the number of merchants in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro that would be involved in the pilot or number of users.
The announcement said TIM is working with the LG Optimus G and two Motorola Razr models, including a Razr HD handset, for the trial.
It’s unclear whether the payWave application would be preloaded or not, but the parties noted that they have hired TSMs for an eventual rollout. Gemalto is serving as TSM for the Telecom Italia group, of which TIM Brasil is a part. Bradesco didn’t identify its TSM in the announcement.
