Canada's CIBC bank has expanded availability of its NFC payments service to customers of mobile network operator Telus. The service was originally launched in November 2012 in partnership with Rogers.
The CIBC Mobile Payment App is available today for CIBC credit card holders with a Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note II or HTC One NFC phone from Telus. Later this month, owners of BlackBerry Z10, Q10 and Bold 9900 NFC phones will also be able to use the service.
"Our clients have embraced mobile technology as part of their banking experience. We believe 2014 will be a year of significant growth for mobile payments as more Canadians start reaching for their phone instead of their wallet at the checkout," says Todd Roberts, CIBC's senior vice president for payments strategy and innovation.
"Right from day one when we launched our first-of-its-kind mobile payment app, we heard from clients about how convenient it is, and about the positive reactions from their friends and family when they've paid at the checkout with their phone," Roberts adds.
"That's why we are excited about today's announcement with Telus, which represents a significant expansion in the mobile payments market and brings this service to more Canadians in 2014."
