UK gov offers passport reader

News in brief

News in brief

The UK Home Office's Identity and Passport Service has created an Android app that allows citizens to read the embedded NFC chip present in most passports issued since 2006. The app is a proof of concept that displays the data held on the passport once a user has entered their passport number, date of expiry and date of birth. The passport cannot be verified as genuine by this method, although future versions of the app might do so, the Home Office says.
