NFC Times Exclusive: Visa has done deals with major mobile operators that would have the telcos preloading the Visa payWave application on their NFC SIMs, according to a representative of Visa Europe.
The deals appear to be similar to the agreement Visa has with Samsung Electronics to preload payWave on embedded chips in Samsung NFC devices. As with payWave on the embedded chips, there would still need to be commercial agreements in place between payment issuers and mobile operators for the applications to be hosted, personalized and activated on the telcos’ SIMs.
“We are trying to remove some of the complexity around TSM (trusted service management) and actually getting the application on the SIM and activating it,” said Mary Carol Harris, vice president for mobile strategic alliances, mobile, contactless and innovation strategy, for Visa Europe.
“We’ve done licenses with most of the major MNOs to preload our application on SIM cards, and that application is actually activated for a bank by a piece of technology called the Visa mobile gateway.”
