Recent CTO of New York City to Lead Scaling of Inclusive Civic Tech
PURCHASE, NY – May 8, 2018 – Mastercard today announced that Miguel Gamiño Jr., most recently chief technology officer of New York City, has joined the company as its executive vice president for global cities. In this newly created role, Gamiño will lead the scaling of urban tech solutions pioneered by Mastercard and shape new partnership models to address cities’ most pressing challenges.
For the first time in history, more people are living in cities than in rural areas. Digital technologies and data insights are powerful tools to foster inclusive communities and ease the stresses of this unprecedented growth. Only by bringing together private, public and civic partners can we ensure access for all to key networks that power the urban economy.
“From basic internet access to better transit links, a successful city needs to include everyone, and that requires a new engagement model between the public and private sector”, comments Hany Fam, executive vice president for enterprise partnerships at Mastercard. “We are strongly committed to partner with cities around the globe to become more inclusive, sustainable and connected places. Miguel’s passion to make tech work for people will help take our leadership to the next level – focused on improving the quality of life of everyone living in and traveling to cities.”
Over the past five years, Mastercard has been engaged with over 100 cities worldwide, transforming how residents and visitors access transit systems, how urban planners use data insights, and how businesses buy and sell goods. The company’s work is underpinned by secure technology that works the same way anywhere in the world – and by the understanding that today’s urban questions are too big for any single entity.
Most recently, Mastercard introduced City Possible, a first-of-its kind initiative bringing together cities with a united private sector to solve system-wide challenges. Corporate partners and cities around the world work together to co-develop, scale and commercialize urban solutions – ensuring that cities can benefit from each other’s learnings rather than having to reinvent the wheel. Gamiño’s expertise and experience will foster collaboration that serves communities across the globe.
Prior to his role in New York, Gamiño was the CIO for the City and County of San Francisco and the CIIO for the City of El Paso. Before that, he was an entrepreneur, developing some of the earliest cloud-based services and launching two companies based in El Paso, TX and Silicon Valley, CA, operating nationwide.
On May 8 – 10, Mastercard is participating in Smart Cities New York, an annual gathering of urban and business leaders from around the globe.
