A Boca Raton woman called police this week after discovering someone used her credit card to run up hundreds of dollars at the fast-food chain in two months, according to a Boca Raton police incident report.
Since Aug. 25, the thief used the card up to several times a day but at just one place: the Burger King at 175 N. Federal Highway in Boca Raton, near Mizner Park. That averages about $14 a day spent at the restaurant.
At first, the 45-year-old woman thought her son in Jacksonville was using her Discover card account for the burger runs, police said. But he hadn't returned to Boca Raton or eaten at any Burger King restaurants, he told her.
That's when the woman began searching for her own card and realized it was missing. She couldn't remember the last time she used it, police said.
All the charges at Burger King were fraudulent, police said, and the woman canceled the card. On Wednesday, she called police
The credit card company told her that on Oct. 9, for example, the thief used the card at Burger King five times, early in the morning and late at night.
Boca Raton police had no suspects as of Friday and declined to comment on the case pending the outcome of the investigation.
In a statement Friday, Burger King Corp. said the company is aware of the alleged credit card fraud in Boca Raton.
"The incident is currently under police investigation and [Burger King Corp.] is cooperating fully with the authorities," the statement said.
In February, the Broward Sheriff's Office was searching for a credit card thief with different cravings. That thief, nicknamed the "Marlboro man," had been breaking into cars since 2008 to steal credit cards, which he then used to buy cartons of cigarettes.
Staff researcher Barbara Hijek contributed to this report.
