Mastercard is searching for an attorney with transactional and product development experience (preferably in the payments space) to join our Law Department. This exciting position is based in our Purchase, NY headquarters and will support our Consumer Products & Processing Team with a focus on Global Prepaid Products. This position will report to the Senior Managing Counsel, Prepaid Products.

As a market leader, our legal team is a critical part of our franchise and business helping to drive the identification, development and distribution of products & solutions that meet the needs of our stakeholders and enable continued growth for our Company and customers, a highly diverse group, including financial institutions, program managers and processors, foreign exchange houses, government agencies, post offices and fintechs).

As a legal team, the Consumer Products & Processing team provides best-in-class legal counsel in connection with our products & solutions as they are identified, developed, tested and brought to market with both existing and new customers. We are business relationship managers - actively participating in crafting the strategic direction of payments through cross functional business and subject matter expert teams. We demonstrate personal accountability to help lead the business forward through hands-on engagement, partnership and strategic value creation.

The ideal candidate is a curious, self-motivated, technology- and payments-minded attorney with transactional experience who can manage day-to-day legal support for dynamic technologists and product developers. The candidate must demonstrate sound business and legal judgment, thrive in a fast-paced environment, with a diverse workload, and have a proven track record of providing pragmatic and proactive legal advice. The candidate must be able to engage at both the tactical and strategic level to support his or her internal clients.

Role

• Partner with the product, technology, sales, franchise, compliance, marketing, communications and others to develop and launch innovative products and solutions that differentiate MasterCard and meet our customers’ and cardholders’ rapidly changing needs.

• Engage and assist clients in managing and mitigating legal and commercial risks.

• Manage tactical and strategic legal support related to our products and solutions to drive sustained scalable distribution, adoption and acceptance of our products & services both physical and digital payments and advance Mastercard’s corporate objectives.

• Collaborate with in-house and external specialists (including data protection, information security, regulatory, intellectual property, litigation and competition law counsel) to identify relevant issues and help the business effectively navigate risk.

• Draft and negotiate a wide range of contracts (including complex product and technology agreements, and customer/vendor agreements) to drive issuer and merchant acceptance and consumer adoption of our prepaid and other consumer products and payments solutions.

• Ensure the monitoring and evaluation of applicable laws and government regulations affecting the operation and activities of our applicable products and activities (in coordination with regional legal colleagues).

• Partner with colleagues to develop and present policy and regulatory positions related to Mastercard’s consumer products and services with relevant internal and external stakeholders.

• Assist with the creation of training materials, product guides, franchise rules, and development activities to advance the business objectives in a compliant manner in accordance with company policies.

All About You

• Law degree from a top-tier university;

• Must be licensed to practice in one or more states, including New York with extensive experience in drafting and negotiating agreements.

• Relevant post-qualification experience in general commercial legal matters in a reputable law firm and/or as in-house lawyer for a multinational company, preferably in the financial services, banking or technology sector.

• Fluent in English (both orally and in writing); additional languages considered an asset.

• Strong drafting and negotiations skills with the ability to manage complex issues as well as support multi-stakeholder forward thinking product development build, launch and run stage requirements, factoring in legal, market and customer requirements and expectations;

• Must be interested in significant contact with business clients on a daily basis with respect to transactional issues as well as other strategic issues;

• Must have a strategic mindset and be able to effectively discuss with and advise management regarding complex legal matters and challenging situations.

• Must be able to contribute and operate effectively within a diverse multicultural organization.

• Should have a positive “can do” attitude, be stress -resistant and ready to go the extra mile.

• Should be a team player who is both organizationally savvy and a strong communicator able to collaborate cross-functionally and across regions and willing to take on responsibilities and roles that support the team.

• Must be able to work independently.

• Must be thorough, meticulous and detail-oriented, but nevertheless able to prioritize and focus on the most important matters rather than just urgent ones.

• Should exercise good commercial judgment, be solutions-oriented and have a creative approach to problem-solving.

• Must be comfortable with technology and have a strong interest in financial technology and security issues.
